Mortimer Strunk was born on July 1, 1833 in Ellicott, Chautauqua, New York. Mortimer
was the oldest of nine children; he had five brothers and three sisters.
In 1850 - US Federal Census shows farm in Pittsford Township, MI.
1860 - US Federal Census shows farms for both Mortimer (aka: Murtemir) and his father
David in Lomodillo Township (pages 518 & 517). Mortimer had his own household with
Mattie and their first son, nine-month old Edwin Strunk.
1862 - Enlisted as a private at Strawberry Point on 11 August at the age of 29,
leaving Mattie to care for their 3-year-old son Edwin . Enlisted in Company D, 21st
Infantry Regiment Iowa on 22 August 1862. Mustered out in 15 July 1865 in Baton

1868 - Summer, moved from Clayton County Iowa to Pawnee County, Nebraska where he
homesteaded and made a timber claim. According to the 1870 Census, the farm was
valued at $400 and his personal estate at $300.

1880 - Pawnee County Fed Census; younger brother Ebinezer & family also listed.
Younger brother Albert Strunk had an adjacent farm valued at $1600; personal estate
