Alice Elwell

Alice was born May 11, 1859 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. She was baptised 25th May 1859 at Ettingshall, near Bilston, Wolverhampton. When Alice was born the Elwells had a two year old son, George Elwell, born in 1857.

In 1861 the Elwells lived on Wolverhampton Road, Bilston, Staffordshire (next door to Alice's grandmother, Ann Maddocks). Joseph was a 27-year old boiler maker (a metal worker).

During the next ten years the Elwells were blessed with four more daughters: Catherine (b.1862), Kate (b.1862), Agnes (b.1865) and Annie (b.1867). In 1871 the Elwells resided at 26 Wolverhampton Road, Bilston, Staffordshire. Joseph was now a head boiler maker master employing two men.

Alice was 22 years old at the time of the 1881 census. The family resided at The Gate Inn, Wolverhampton Road, Bilston, Staffordshire where her father Joseph was a beerhouse keeper and Alice a barmaid. The Elwell family had continued to grow and there were now 9 children, ranging in age from 2 to 24. The three new children were Horace (b.1874), Lottie (b.1877) and Howard (b.1879).

The Maddocks were prolific publicans, licensees of public houses. The Gate Inn was in the Maddocks family for several years before Joseph ran it.

Early in 1891 Alice married Thomas Molineux in Birmingham (St. Thomas), Warwickshire. They lived at 125 Ryland Road, Birmingham. Alice's older brother George, her widowed mother Catherine and her younger brother Howard were living with them. Thomas molineux managed a grocery. (more about their family)
